Check what your child can do now:

  • Talk and respond to others, listen, ask, and answer questions
  • Listen to and enjoy stories and nursery rhymes
  • Say or sing familiar songs and rhymes
  • Name and describe objects, places, pictures, and events
  • Use imagination to create own stories
  • Use complete sentences
  • Follow simple one-step directions
  • Recognize words or signs he or she sees often
  • Name some familiar letters
  • Count to 10 or higher
  • Count five objects by touching each one in turn
  • Recognize some numbers
  • Name the colors in a box of eight crayons
  • Name the basic shapes: circle, triangle, square, and rectangle
  • Match and sort by size, shape, and color
  • Compare and describe objects and sounds all around telling the shape, size, color, texture, material, sound, or rate of movement
  •  Explore ways that one action causes another
  •  Express wants and needs using words rather than actions
  •  Seek and accept help when needed
  •  Adjust to new places and experiences
  •  Take care of belongings and materials at home, school, and other places
  •  Follow rules and routines
  •  Know first and last name
  •  Take care of toileting needs and wash hands
  •  Know street address
  •  Climb, balance on one foot, hop, jump, and run
  •  Throw, bounce, and catch a large ball
  •  Fill and empty cups or other containers with sand or water
  •  Create objects with play dough or clay by rolling, patting, and squeezing
  •  Build a tower with five blocks
  •  Use pencils, crayons, paint brushes, and markers for drawing on blank paper
  •  Try to write using pencils, crayons, and markers
  •  Cut paper with scissors
  •  Button, snap, and zip clothing
